Cell Phones Frequently Asked Questions

What if my phone stops working?

First call Nextel Customer Care, 1-800-639-6111 to distinguish if it is a network or hardware problem or email.

How is Nextel Coverage in our area?

In the Southeastern Wisconsin and Northern Chicago area, Nextel leads the pack. Our loyalty is to the customer and Tower Communications demos various cellular companies to give the customers the best product for the money. Nextel is so far the best and improving its network daily.

Can I retrieve my Voice Mail messages when outside my home market?

You can check messages when traveling outside your home market by dialing your own Nextel phone number. You will incur a long distance charge when dialing your number outside your home market.

Can my Nextel Voice Mail be forwarded to another mailbox?

Yes. To forward a message to another mailbox you should chose option 5 from the Personal options Menu in your Voice Mail.

How can I check my Nextel Voice Mail messages?

For i1000, i2000, i500plus, i550plus, i700plus, i1000plus or i2000plus phones:

  1. From the Phone Ready screen, press the option key under "Mail".
  2. Select Voice Mail by scrolling to VoiceMail or by pressing the "1" key.
  3. Press the option key under "Ok". The Voice Mail screen appears. The numbers of new and total messages display.
  4. Press the option key under "Dial". NOTE: If you hear a message that says, "Enter the phone number of the subscriber you are trying to reach," enter your own 10-digit Nextel phone number. When the greeting plays, press the " * " key to receive the password prompt.
  5. When prompted, enter your password.

For i95cl, i90c, i88s, i85s, i80s, i60c, i55sr, i50sx, i35s and i30sx phone:

  1. Access the Message Center
  2. If MESG is one of your display options, press the option key under MESG
  3. If MESG is not one of your display options, press the "menu" key, Scroll to Messages, and press the option key under SELECT.
  4. Scroll to Voice Mail. The numbers of new and total messages display.
  5. Press the option key under CALL. Note: If you hear a message that says, "Enter the phone number of the subscriber you are trying to reach," enter your own 10-digit Nextel phone number. When the greeting plays, press the " * " key to receive the password prompt.
  6. When prompted, enter your password.

From another phone:

  1. Dial your 10-digit Nextel phone number.
  2. When you hear your greeting, press the " * " key. You will be prompted to enter your password.
  3. Enter your password.

How do I set up my Voice Mail?

  1. Dial your 10-digit Nextel Phone Number. If you are calling from a phone other than your Nextel phone, dial your 10-digit Nextel phone number and press the " * " key when you hear the greeting.
  2. If you are calling from a phone other than your Nextel phone, you will hear a greeting. Press the " * " key to access your Voice Mail account.
  3. When prompted, enter your password. (If you are a new user, enter the last seven digits of your phone number. This is your temporary password.)
  4. Follow the instructions given during the recorded tutorial to: Create a new four to seven-digit password. Record your name and greeting.
  5. When the system says, "Enjoy using Nextel Voice Mail," your mailbox is set up.

If I accidentally delete a message, how can I recover it?

You can recover deleted messages by pressing the " * " key, then the "3" key while you are still in the Voice Mail session during which you deleted the message(s). After you end the session, however, you can no longer recover deleted messages.

What is a remote desktop connection?

A remote desktop connection is a feature offered by Windows that allows you to remotely control your computer from home, while traveling, or at another location. All you need is a compatible computer with internet access and terminal server capabilities. This then allows you to access your data, applications, and network resources that are on your company’s server without being in the office.

Can I use the wireless card to connect to my local wireless connection?

Yes. Your wireless card will display both the local wireless connections and any wireless service connection in the area.

How do I set up the wireless card?

Sales sets up the card for our customers. The set process is quite easy. Just follow the steps listed below:

  1. Load the Sprint Wireless Software CD.
  2. Follow the on screen prompts.
  3. Watch for the prompt to insert the wireless card.
  4. Insert the wireless card into the port on your laptop.
  5. Follow the on screen prompts until you are provided the option to click finish.
  6. Click finish.
  7. Double click on Sprint Access manager icon.
  8. Click connect.
  9. Test internet access: send an email, go on the internet, etc.

Is it hard to connect to the internet using the wireless card?

All you need to do is double click on one icon. Then select the wireless connection you wish to use by double clicking.

How fast is this internet connection?

It is at least 3 times faster then dial up and comparable to a DSL or Cable connection. For a free demonstration please contact Tower Communications.

Is this wireless connection safe?

Yes. A VPN and firewall can provide end to end protection. And the wireless software that comes with the card provides authentication and data protection.

Is the wireless card affected by weather conditions?

No. Just like your cell phone works in rain, snow and wind so will the wireless internet connection.

Can I use a regular internet connection with my wireless card?

Yes. Simply do not connect to the internet using your wireless card. And connect to your DSL or Cable like normal.

Glossary

Air Time
Actual time spent talking on the wireless telephone. Most carriers bill customers based on how many minutes of airtime they use each month. The more minutes of time spent talking on the phone, the higher the bill.
Nextel Network
Simply an all digital network that never roams or shares time with other networks. It is not an analog system with digital signals riding on top of its frequencies. This means that you can enjoy the quality network that Nextel has spent billions of dollars on to ensure a fantastic network.
Off-Peak
The periods of time after the business day has ended during which the carriers offer discounted airtime charges. Nextel's off-peak consists of Monday – Friday from 9:00pm to 7:00am and from Friday at 9:00pm to Monday at 7:00am.
Peak
The part of the business day in which wireless customers can expect to pay full service rates.
Portable
A small, lightweight handset that fits in a suit pocket or purse and transmits at no more than 0.6 watts of power provided by a small rechargeable battery.
Remote Desktop Connection
Remote Desktop connection is a feature offered by Windows that allows you to remotely control your computer from home, while traveling, or at another location. All you need is a compatible computer with internet access. This then allows you to access your data, applications, and network resources that are on your desktop computer, without being in the office.
Roaming
The ability to use a wireless phone to make and receive calls in places outside your home calling area. Nextel never roams due to the all digital network.
Talk Time
The length of time you can talk on your portable or transportable wireless phone without recharging the battery. The battery capacity of a phone is usually expressed in terms of "minutes of talk time" or "hours of standby time." When you’re talking, the phone draws more power from the battery.
Voice-Activated Dialing
A feature which permits you to dial a phone number by speaking it to your wireless phone instead of punching it in yourself. The feature contributes to convenience as well as driving safety.
Voice Mail
(Also called voice messaging) A computerized answering service that answers a call, plays a greeting and records a message. Depending on the sophistication of the service, it also can notify you via a pager that you have received a call. After you have retrieved your messages, you can delete them, save them or forward them to someone else on your voice mail system.

Describes radio-based systems allowing transmission of telephone.
